Post-Livelihood
First off, we'd like to thank everyone who came out to the "Livelihood"/"Rental" movie premieres. It was quite simply, a smashing success for Ryan, Tracey, Stachurski, Curtis, Armando, and everyone involved in these pictures, which was a boatload of folks. I think it was, quite honestly, the first coming together of Baltimore's new breed of filmmakers en masse for something big other then a competition or festival. Not only did numerous filmmakers from Bmore have a hand in this feature, but as I looked through the packed crowds of the premiere, I saw many groups attending and supporting this film, and that was truly an awe-inspiring sight. Let's make some more stuff and bigger stuff together and really show to the world that Baltimore really IS "The Greatest City In America" OR MORE THEN JUST "The City That Reads" because we'll give this city and this world so many kickass films, no one would even have time to read! We can do it!

You should submit that entry as a letter to the editor to The City Paper.
I saw it. Kinda thought it blew. Too long, too much color filtering. Shows the director has quite limited editorial sense. Please don't make yourself sound like you're representative of 'film' making in Baltimore, because you really aren't.
Unless being good means having an entourage of people crammed up your ass.
haha! You got to love anonymous comments. Anyways, we've all (crew, cast, and others) said it was too long in one way or another, but from what I know, it's getting further chopped down to make it much, much leaner. This is the director's 1st feature by the way and a lot of the things Ryan did, during production and post made the most out of what he had to work with (which wasn't very much by the way.) The color filtering or the "film look" wasn't exactly my cup of tea either, but it was consistent because he used it throughout the entire movie, so I don't see why it bothers you so much. As for editorial sense, like I said, it was his first feature and for that, his editorial sense developed quite damn quickly and as a director, he made the most out of his very low, low, budget and accomplished some pretty amazing things that you would only think would be used on big budget flicks.
And as notorious as "ANONYMOUS" is throughout the Baltimore Indie-film scene, I still think we stack up as representatives of this creative community, even with the discomfort of having all these people "up our asses." We've been making shorts, videos, films, and putting in work for us and this scene long before anyone decided to notice what we were doing and our approach to creating is the same as it was as it is now. We definitely don't speak for all folks and nor do we try to. I think simply, we are part of something good, (really good in fact) and we personally have accomplished things that we are truly proud of. We have watched and helped our community grow and truly respect and admire numerous groups coming from this area, being creative and getting play time in and around Baltimore and beyond.
I can't remember the last time "Anonymous" did anything worth mentioning in this community, so I don't see where you have room to speak on this, so I seriously suggest you keep our name out your mouth, but you giving us that name recognition will only do us good anyways because the only thing of positive value that you ever say about us will be the words "BETTER HOLLYWOOD." So yeah, keep catching our movie screenings and if you want a DVD, I'll gladly hook you up, but I keep forgetting "Anonymous" has no face, no name, no address, nothing to show for himself but his words.
First of all, the color filtering was there so that it wouldn't look like video. It was shot on a first generation Sony VX1000. If you didn't like the look of the color corrected version, you would've liked the non-color-corrected version even less. Plus, each section of the film had a separate "color theme". MTV-style oversaturated for Rock Zombie, 2-strip Technicolor for Corporate Zombie, and brownish bleach-bypass (a la 70s exploitation films) for Mother In-Law Zombie. Does it look just like film? No, but it doesn't look like video either. It's stylized, and different, and I think it's cool. And since it's my movie, in the end I'm the only one who has to be happy about it. And I'm thrilled about the way it looks.
Secondly, the movie was originally 2hr45min. Cutting 45 minutes out was tough. Cutting another 15 minutes out will be even tougher. But you try writing, shooting, and editing a feature-length film of this scope, and then get back to me with some constructive criticism. Having an audience watch it for the first time was invaluable. Now that I know which parts had people shifting in their seats, I'm better able to make a shorter cut of the film.
Finally, our entourage of people crammed up our asses happened to be members from almost every single filmmaking group in Baltimore. And most of them helped out with the film. Now, just because you can't get that many talented local filmmakers to help you out and to support you doesn't mean that you should be bitter. It just means you should stop being an arrogant asshole, stop anonomously critiquing people's hard work, and start making your own feature-length film. Maybe if you ask nicely I'll let you be "assistant asswipe" on my next film. Jackass.
Sincerely,
Ryan Graham
Glad to hear it's getting cut down. Although there were some stellar moments in the film, there were times that really dragged. But aren't most filmmaker's first cut like this?
And I was unaware that there was any color filtering. Perhaps that's a good thing.
{sarcasm)Gotta love those wonderful, oh-so-heroic critical comments by 'Anonymous' (/sarcasm). Too much color filtering? Livelihood is one of the best-looking MiniDV films I've ever seen. Ryan worked wonders with those filters; the film looked great blown up on the screen at The Charles. You know what could actually gain you some respect next time you choose to dump on someone's work on the internet? Do it under your name. Own up to it. Your opinion is no different (and just as disposable) as the countless jerkoffs on the internet that won't get off their ass to create something yet feel compelled to they tear anything else down.
Thanks Armando. Glad you liked the way it looked. I noticed that you were able to work some color-correction-magic with your film, too. It didn't look even vaguely green, and I was watching for it!
Anyway, internet trolls suck. So, to this dumbass I will quote Jay, from Kevin Smith's "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", responding to a troll harping on their upcoming film:
"All you fucks are gonna pay! You are the ball lickers! We are gonna fuck your mothers while you watch and whine like little bitches.... We are gonna make them eat our shit and shit out our shit and eat their shit which is made up of our shit that we made them eat."
And that should probably be the end of feeding the troll. Now let's just post nice happy comments about how great The City Paper is and stuff like that.... Or not.
I will post these comments as someone outside the Baltimore film making scene who attended the screening with a friend. I googled Ryan Graham's name and the movie name and found this site. Take my words however you want them.
I thought that Livelihood was way too long. I don't even think cutting 15 minutes is enough. I don't know much about making films, I just watch them, but as a non biased viewer, I thought it was a great idea and a well made film, but it slowed down and never caught up.
It had some great moments and some great performances and I think that if ryan Graham streamlines his next movie it will be much better.
Rental was good, but too short to really live up to the premise. It was well made but some of the sound was inconsistant. I couldn't hear a lot of the dialogue. Some of the acting was really good but some of it was really bad, especially the guy who gets eaten at the end.
Cereal Boy was the standout for me. It was short, to the point, and hilarious.
Keep making movies and I'm sure all of you will be incredibly successful!
It’s apparent that the original Anonymous comments aren’t genuine. It seems that they’re pissed because it got attention, or maybe they’re just mean… but there’s no need to get the ants-in-your-pants. Just consider it a compliment and ignore it. The second Anonymous was genuine, and should be encouraged. Thank you, #2. -Stachurski
Gotta love anonymous posters - the sad truth is there are millions of people who want to make a film, who try to make a film, and don't have the resources, competence, or fortitude to pull it off. Lots of resentment out of that. The fact is that there are only small handful of people, in Baltimore or anywhere else, that actually see their projects to completion. Props to Ryan Graham and to everyone at Better Hollywood Productions for getting it done and out there, and screw the naysayers.
